Singles League Racing 2006-2007

Singles League Racing Frequently Asked Questions

What is Singles League?

Singles League is an association of San Francisco Bay Area ski clubs that gather during the winter in the spirit of friendly Alpine competition. The clubs are all members of the Bay Area Council of ski clubs, which, in turn is a member of the Far West Ski Association.

Where are the clubs located?

Our clubs are spread around the San Francisco Bay Area from Walnut Creek to San Francisco, to San Jose and all points in between.

Do I have to be single?

All of the clubs in Singles League are indeed clubs for singles, but there are many couples in the various clubs, most of whom have met on the slopes. If you're not married, you're single.

Then is this league a real meat market?

Nothing could be further from the truth. We are simply a group of single skiing and boarding enthusiasts that enjoy our brand of friendly competition and camaraderie.

I'm a snowboarder. Can I join a club?

Absolutely. As long as you have fun in the snow, whether that be by Alpine or Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing, or just having a snowball fight, you are welcome.

How old do I have to be to join?

Members must be 21 years old to join a Singles League club.

I'm a snowboarder. Can I race?

Yes! We have 4 snowboarding divisions: men's advanced, men's intermediate, women's advanced, and women's intermediate. Snowboarders race on the same courses as the intermediate and advanced skiers. As we gain more racing snowboarders in our ranks, we will consider a move to a true snowboard course.

Do I have to be a former *club*... *collegiate*... *Olympic*... racer to compete?

o. We have courses and handicap levels designed for all skiing/boarding ability levels from former collegiate racer down to sheer beginner.

No, really. I 'm terrible. I can barely ski. Can I race?

Yes. All you need is the desire to better your abilities. Our beginner course is on a very gentle slope and is much shorter than the other courses. Your race director will be happy to assist you and teach you all of the ins-and-outs of racing.

'm a good skier-boarder. Why should I race?

Racing is one of the best ways to learn skiing/boarding technique that you can apply to the entire hill. We offer several clinics throughout the season that will help expand your abilities on both the course and the rest of the mountain.

What if I don't want to waste half the day waiting to race?

With the exception of our largest divisions where delays are sometimes inevitable, most of our races go very quickly and the racers seldom have to wait more than 10 minutes to get in the start gate. That time can be used to stretch out, mentally run the course, triple check your equipment, or psyche-out the competition.

What are the Singles League rules?

A copy of the rules can be found on the rules page.

What happens when the race season is over? The fun ends 'til winter, right?

Wrong! The fun continues all year long. Each club has a myriad of summer events and parties starting with the Racey Affair and continuing all throughout summer and fall. Activities like abalone diving, volleyball, softball, hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, sailing, and rollerblading are run by the Singles League clubs.
